Description
Community centre in addition to the BT Soweto Community 1. Development has been reimagined to reproduce the complexity of a small neighbourhood with the additional supplementary programmes to the housing. By building the multi storey residential units at a high density, UTTE carved out a central public open space as well as a site for a community centre.
This community centre is run by the community for the ongoing social and economic sustainability of the overall development. At a social level, the facility activates the central open space, while providing the necessary amenities for communal living – including a soccer field, congregational space, creche, internet cafe as well as a rooftop urban farm. The ongoing maintenance of the development is further supported economically by the commercial activation possible to be hosted in the community facility – through income generation in the creche, soccer tournaments, internet café usage as well as through the sale of fresh produce grown on the rooftop. Lastly, the community facility will be topped with photo-voltaic panels providing solar power for the centre and wider community.
